Ghost ship runs aground in Bristol Channel sparking desperate search for missing sailor, 43

  • David Moore’s 20ft boat ‘the Egoist’ was found without him on board on Monday
  • It ran aground 30 miles from Bristol at Berrow at around 6.30am yesterday 
  • The 43-year-old’s disappearance is being treated as a missing person’s case  

A search has been launched for a missing sailor after his yacht was found abandoned in the Bristol Channel.   

Police and coastguards are looking for David Moore whose 20ft boat, the ‘Egoist’, ran aground at 6.30am on Monday without him on board.

The 43-year-old’s disappearance is being treated as a missing person case, police said.

He is thought to have left Watchet Marina in Somerset and headed towards Bristol over the weekend. The boat ran aground at Berrow – 30 miles from Bristol.

The boat is originally from VVW Nieuwpoort, a marina in Nieuwpoort, on the coast of Belgium.  

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said: ‘Officers are concerned for the welfare of David Moore.

‘Police are working with HM Coastguard to try to find the owner of the yacht which has run aground at Berrow.

‘A witness reported seeing the ‘Egoist’ apparently abandoned at about 6.30am today, June 3.

‘The vessel was seen leaving Watchet Marina on the afternoon of Saturday June 1.’
