A pregnant woman claims Tesco wouldn't let her in without a face covering despite having proof of exemption.

Due to the spike in coronavirus cases the supermarket has implemented a strict no mask, no entry policy since January 12, with shoppers asked to leave if they do not have a medical reason for not wearing one.

Kay Watkin went to the Tesco Extra in Bulwell on January 14 with proof she's exempt from having to wear a mask but claims she was stopped from entering regardless NottinghamshireLive reports.

The 29-year-old is heavily pregnant and suffers from severe asthma, and her partner Matt Mckie says their treatment was "disgraceful".

He said: "The lady who stopped us had seen us several times and she knew my partner was exempt.

"But this time she decided she did not want to let us in without a mask. I felt like we were not welcome.

"We contacted Tesco and they said they would feed it back to the store.

"They did not apologise. We had proof with us and she said she was not coming in.

"My partner was very disheartened. It is our local store but since then we have not really been. It is disgraceful."

Mr Mckie, 31, said they had printed off the exemption card from the Government's website.

The website states those who have an age, health or disability reason for not wearing a face covering, "you do not routinely need to show any written evidence of this".

It also states an exemption card is not needed for proof.

A Tesco spokesman said: "We want everyone to feel welcome at Tesco and we are sorry that this customer wasn't happy with their experience.

"Since the start of the pandemic, we have focused on ensuring everyone can get the food they need in a safe environment.

"To protect our customers and colleagues, we won't let anyone into our stores who is not wearing a face covering, unless they are exempt in line with Government guidance.

"We are also asking our customers to shop alone, unless they're a carer or with children."
