The new mutant strain of coronavirus first identified in England has been recorded in America.

The first case of the new variant has been reported by officials in Colorado with a male in his 20s currently in isolation in Elbert County, Washington Post reports.

According to a tweet from the office of Gov. Jared Polis, the patient has no history of travel leading to an investigation as to where he may have contracted the virus.

He wrote: “The individual has no close contacts identified so far but public health officials are working to identify other potential cases and contacts through thorough contact tracing interviews.”

The United States becomes the latest country to detect the more contagious version of the disease with 17 countries including Australia and South Korea, also identifying it.

Unlike the patient in Colorado, most other cases have been found in people who recently travelled from the UK.

The new strain has caused a huge spike in cases across England, particularly in the south but there is no sign of it spreading as quickly overseas.
